Warm spring-like, rainy and sunny weather had made all but the drifts of snow disappear. Overnight last night that changed in a big way with about 4 inches of fresh, light, fluffy powder. Picture perfect opportunity not to be missed. Hey, what is all this stuff? It has been a while since I put one of these up. One might guess I’d stopped appreciating the beauty of where we live. That would be a bad guess. It is lovely here and I know it. I took my camera out to capture a photo of the broken ice. When I zoomed in to frame it the way I wanted, one of the American Dippers who lives in OUR RIVER was in the frame! That precipitated numerous shots, a few of which came out well. […]
Three days with the HIGH temperatures below freezing while lows bounce above and below zero … add a little snow into the mix and we have what I consider a sudden onslaught of winter. I was clearly right in rushing to get stuff done before Sunday. Theoretically, I can throw logs on the fire, relax and watch the river freeze over. But momentum is a factor. I can’t shift to a laid-back, feet-up position that fast. Still, it is pretty. Here the river banks are creeping into the stream. The surface is turning into a slurry. Steam is rising in the minus-6-degree dawn being captured in the branches of the riverside trees. […]
It is a different world when the snow keeps on coming and we don’t have to go anywhere. We can just relax, smile and enjoy our snug little cabin. Better still, the storm is expected to be past by the time we do have places to go and people to see. We are seeing snow like our winter on the other side of the mountains in Grangeville. Certainly no shortage of moisture in our mountains this year. Our front yard this morning … The snow was still falling as I took these snapshots. You can just make out their white streaks on the dark background of the river. The temperature is up in the high 20s with no wind. It is quite pleasant out. Many of you know how calming, quiet and peaceful a new coat of snow makes the world. It makes any time and place more special … (I can almost hear my daughter responding, “Yeah, especially Hawaii”).
December 22nd view outside our cabin window… lest I forget that our world is a beautiful place.
Heading in to Darby from Conner today, we passed this herd of elk. From the photo I counted 67 elk, but could easily be off by quite a bit either way. Regardless, they are beautiful. It is great that there are some good, strong herds here.
I began blogging, that is self-publishing Idaholiberty.com on the Internet in 2007. At the time, I was chairman of the Idaho Libertarian Party, growing it to its largest membership in 35 years, eventually twice a candidate for Idaho governor – very active politically, culturally, and doing my best to share knowledge. “The Blogosphere” seemed like a great tool … still does. In 2013 I found myself no longer tethered to Idaho’s Treasure Valley. Montana’s Bitterroot Valley had caught my interest long before. In March I found a cabin in Conner that was to become our foothold in this area and by June we had completed the move. You can see in my series Post Card From Conner, it is […]
Conner Cabin from the bridgeWe spent over four years making this perfect for the two of us, but it is a bit snug with my Mom here too. We are moving to more appropriate housing and leaving our lovely riverside home behind. Major remodeling along with addition of the adjacent lot to our lease transformed this river-front home into a real find. UPDATE: The official listing information (at the bottom of the page) calls this a 756 square foot home. That is what we bought, but the 8-foot by 21-foot studio space is very much an integral part of the home. In reality, this is more accurately calculated as a 924 square foot home. I had a conversation with someone […]
